CAVANAUGH, C. M., S. L. GARDINER, M. L. JONES, H. W. JANNASCH, & J. B. WATERBURY (1981). Prokaryotic Cells in the Hydrothermal Vent Tube Worm Riftia pachyptila Jones: Possible Chemoautotrophic Symbionts. Science 213 (4505): 340-342.

RICHTER, G. & R. R. SEAPY (1999). Heteropoda, pp. 621-647. In: D. Boltovskoy (ed.), South Atlantic Zooplankton. Leiden: Backhuys Publ.

UDEKEM D’ACOZ, C. D’ (1999).

NOTICE TO CONTRIBUTORS

EDITORIAL POLICY OF VIERAEA

Vieraea is an annual scientific publication containing unpublished scientific notes on Botany, Ecology, Paleontology and Zoology concerning the Canary Islands or, in a wider sense, the Macaronesian Region. It will also contain bibliographical commentaries on works which are of interest.

The annual volume may be divided into two or more separate issues, depending on the matters contained or for reasons of editorial speed.

Every work or scientific note sent to Vieraea for publication will be assessed by at least one evaluator. Acting as evaluers and correctors will be the members of the Editorial Board and those persons elected directly by them by reason of their competence and speciality. Special attention will be given to the originality, quality and interest of the manuscript’s contents and its graphic complement, as well as to the compliance with prevailing writing standards. Approval of a manuscript for its publication rests at all events with the Editorial Board.

The contents of articles, notes and bibliographical commentaries published in Vieraea are the exclusive responsibility of the authors. The approval of papers for publication implies the transfer to Organismo Autónomo de Museos y Centros de Tenerife the rights of copy, distribution and sale, as well as the power of attorney to grant licenses to third parties of these rights.

Works and scientific notes accepted will be published by order of acceptance unless, for a valid cause and at the proposal of the Director of Vieraea, Editorial Board would to decide otherwise.

Vieraea publishes works written preferably in Spanish and English. Also accepted are those in German, French, Italian and Portuguese.

REMITTING OF MANUSCRIPTS

The authors will send the Secretary of Vieraea a copy of his article in CD or e-mail (to ensure the reception, “delivery-receipt” and “read-receipt” options are recommended) whichever format of text processor compatible with Microsoft Windows OS, meeting the following requirements:

-   Times New Roman font (size 10) will be used (with the exception of the paragraphs indicated below in the “writing standards” section), complete justification and simple interlinear spacing.

-   Lateral margins will be defined as follows (in cm): top 5.6, bottom 5.1, left 4 and right 4.3, for DIN A-4 paper (please, don’t make up the pages). It is recommended that articles do not exceed 25 pages.

-   The photos will be published in black and white. If authors wish to include colour photographs they must pay the cost involved. These files must be sent separately in high resolution JPG or TIFF format.

-   The article will have a marginal indication of the position desired for the figures, in the event that these have not been inserted in the text.

The Secretary will advise the authors of its approval, if this is the case, and eventually, the editorial instructions and corrections he should carry out for its publication. Having done this, authors will send the final manuscript within the period specified by the Editorial Board.

Authors will receive the final PDF file used for printing. If wishing to dispose of offprints of the article, must be payed for them. It should be ordered when sending the proofs.

WRITING STANDARDS

The contents of articles and scientific notes will abide by the provisions of the respective international code of zoological and botanical nomenclature. In like manner it is advisable to pay attention to the recommendations of the said codes.

Articles

1. With both lateral indentation (10 mm) to the whole paragraph:

-   Title in capitals and small letters, font size 12 and bold. If they exist, Latin names of taxons of the level of species and genus will be in italics and shown at the end of the title and in brackets, at least the family level taxon and another higher one of general knowledge.

-   Name (not shortened) and surname/s of authors, in small capitals.

-   Postal and electronic address to contact authors (in italics).

-   Bibliographical review of the article (font size 8) in English (or Spanish if article is written in English).

-   Abstract in English, if possible not more than 12 lines, followed by a maximum of ten (10) key words, and next, the same in Spanish (RESUMEN). When the article is in English, the order of abstracts is reversed and if written in a language different from Spanish or English, another abstract may follow in such language.

2. Not indented:

-   Text of the article. If the figures have not been inserted in the text, their position will be marked on the printed copy of the article, in the margin. In this case, the list of figures with their respective legends will be added at the end of the article, after the bibliography. The figures will have a scale in metric system. The section of acknowledgements, if there is one, will be the last heading of the text.

-   Bibliography: In alphabetical order and as the following example. The author’s commentaries will go at the end [in square brackets]:

CAVANAUGH, C. M., S. L. GARDINER, M. L. JONES, H. W. JANNASCH, & J. B. WATERBURY (1981). Prokaryotic Cells in the Hydrothermal Vent Tube Worm Riftia pachyptila Jones: Possible Chemoautotrophic Symbionts. Science 213 (4505): 340-342.

RICHTER, G. & R. R. SEAPY (1999). Heteropoda, pp. 621-647. In: D. Boltovskoy (ed.), South Atlantic Zooplankton. Leiden: Backhuys Publ.

UDEKEM D’ACOZ, C. D’ (1999).

Scientific Notes

The rules for scientific notes are equivalent to those of the articles, but will not have a summary, and the author’s name and address will go right at the end. There will be no literature section. Instead of it, references will be inserted directly in the text (in braquets if necessary, and the rest in [square brackets]), following the example below:

... (Cavanaugh et al., 1981 [Science 213 (4505): 340-342]).

... (Richter & Seapy, 1999 [Heteropoda. In D. Boltovskoy (ed.), South Atlantic Zooplankton]).

The notes may include a figure providing they do not exceed a printed page, which is their limit, except to the chorological notes. Short chorological notes, news and single observations are excluded.

Bibliographical commentaries

The complete bibliographical review of the work discussed will head the commentary, together with the publisher’s postal and electronic address and the price, if known. The commentator’s name and his academic filiation or address will go at the end. It is advisable not to exceed a printed page.

Style

The writing style of works will be as befits the scientific language, concise and with the minimum number of tables and illustrations. It is advisable to follow the guidance of the “Style Manual” and "Illustrating Science" published by the Council of Biology Editors, as well as the following norms:

-   Headings will be in capital letters, centred and separated 2 lines from preceding paragraph, and one line from the next.

-   Secondary headings will be in bold type and in left margin, separated one line from preceding paragraph and the next.

-   No additional space is left between paragraphs, and the beginning of each paragraph will be indented (8 mm), unless it has a headline.

-   Paragraph headlines will be in bold, followed by colon or dot and dash, and then the running text.

-   For arrangement of the article, if that is the case, the system of legal numeration will be used (1., 1.1., 2., 2.1., etc,).

-   The figures will be correlatively numbered with Arabic numerals (for ex. Fig. 1), and the tables, with Roman numerals (for ex. Table IV).

-   In the running text, capital letters will only be used for acronyms. Names of the authors of taxons or of referenced works will be in small letters; if exceptionally a difference has to be made between one and the other, small capitals will be used for the authors of works.

-   In the main text and headlines, italics will be used exclusively for taxons of species and generic level. The text in another language or titles of referenced works will be in quotation mark (« »).

-   Numbers representing years will not have the thousand point.

-   In Spanish, capital letters are accentuated.

-   In Spanish, the comma will separate decimal numbers.

-   Abbreviations of kilometres and hectares will always be in small letters (for ex. 8 km, 7 ha).

The editorial staff of Vieraea may apply a smaller size of letter to those parts of the text it considers less relevant or complementary to the main treatise.

***

These standards of style may be modified if the arrangement of the article requires it and this is accepted by the Editorial Board.
